National School Sanitation Initiative, 27 April 2010, New Delhi
National School Sanitation Initiative launched in India by Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) and GTZ to effectuate a quantifiable achievement in the provisions and practices of sanitation in the country. The Honorable Union Ministers Mr. Jaipal Reddy, (MoUD), Mr. Kapil Sibal (MHRD), Mr. Aamir Khan, who is the Brand Ambassador for the initiative and Mr. Stefan Helming (GTZ) with several other dignitaries from MoUD and MHRD inaugurated and launched the event in Delhi.
Mr. Aamir Khan, the Brand Ambassador of the initiative administered a Sanitation Pledge for the school children present on the occasion and inspired them to take a lead for cultivating good hygiene practices.
The Honorable Union Minister Mr. Kapil Sibal, MHRD announced launching of Health and Wellness Clubs in schools to provide impetus through the initiative. The Honorable Union Minister Mr. Jaipal Reddy, MoUD thanked MHRD for cooperating in the joint endeavor of two Ministries and expressed deep sense of gratitude for GTZ and CBSE to promote the National School Sanitation initiative for 100% sanitation. More than 100 schools affiliated to CBSE all over India are supporting the National School Sanitation Initiative.
The initiative supports the goals laid in the National Urban Sanitation Policy 2008 (NUSP) by focusing on proper sanitation and hygiene, its disposal and waste segregation in order to achieve an Open Defecation Free Life for all the citizens. The schools and students are considered to be the ‘Agents of Change and Transformation’ for a countrywide initiative on sanitation through awareness generation and behavioral change.
