Target Group The target group includes officers from the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Govt. of India; Ministry of Urban Development, Govt. of India; Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation, Govt. of India; State Government Departments of Urban Development and State level nodal agencies for JNNURM for the states of Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala; and Urban Local Bodies of the five selected cities of Kochi, Nashik, Raipur, Shimla and Varanasi. (One person per organisation, with a total of 13 persons)

Course objectives

1. To strengthen the capacities of the participants for urban renewal with a focus on improved solid waste management; improved water supply & waste water management; sustainable transport and climate action planning for the participating cities.
2. To sensitize the participants towards urban & environmental planning including provision of environmental infrastructure within cities.
3. To strengthen the participating departments for supporting the planning and transformation processes of urban management and urban renewal in a financially sustainable manner.

Expected results/impacts

Expected Output:

The purpose of the visit is to learn from the experience of urban process and management in the German cities of Hamburg and Berlin through a visit-cum exposure dialogue. It is foreseen that the visit of these cities, which have an environmentally sound management system, should strengthen the resolve of the partners to improve the process of implementation of the JNNURM project. A probable transformation of international best practices to the Indian context is also seen at an expected output.

  • Municipal Solid Waste- Development of municipal solid waste management systems in Germany, experience with Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) models, awareness raising, plastic recycling, bio-waste composting plants, anaerobic digestion technology, etc.
  • Water supply and Waste Water Management- Development of drinking water supply and waste water treatment in Germany, operation and maintenance, detection and prevention of water leakages, water saving methods, innovative solution, groundwater protection, storm water management, Hamburg Water cycle etc.
  • Sustainable Transport: Sustainable transport as part of the city development strategies.
  • Urban & Environmental Planning- Spatial Planning, city planning, infrastructural needs, city development of Berlin and Hamburg
  • Harbour Development and ecological needs
  • Climate action plan – Climate action planning for cities & showcasing the efforts of the city of Hamburg.
