Sustainable Urban Habitat (SUH)

The objective of programmes and activities under this thrust area is to improve planning, financing and operation of urban environmental infrastructure in selected cities. The services include:

  • Technical support for the implementation of projects and reforms, in at least 4 cities, under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission of the Goverment of India.
  • Support and implementation of the EcoCity programme for the promotion of ecologically, economically and socially balanced urban development in the cities of Kottayam, Ujjain, Vrindavan, Puri and Tirupati.
  • Upgrading urban sustainability management capacities in the participating agencies of the EcoCity programme.
  • Initiating a municipal environmental reporting system under the Urban Environmental Information System (Urb-Envis Project) in selected cities and town, to increase local participation in environmental processes and decision-making.
  • An air quality data acquisition system has been developed for the Central Pollution Control Board.
  • Air Pollution Source Apportionment studies in major Indian cities to track down the sources and assess the extent of their contribution to air pollution
